Change the Politics of Hate!!!

It is pretty sad when you cannot even put up a yard sign supporting Barack Obama without it being slashed down with a knife (or burned to the ground). So much for free speech, ha? Yes...this happened to me, and it's happening all over the country. But this hardly even begins to describe the hate brewing rhetoric that has come out of the McCain campaign. Politics are politics, and candidates will inevitable get ugly, but the McCain campaign has taken ugly to a new level, putting the life of a fellow AMERICAN, Barack Obama, at stake for the sake of trying to win this election. It began with insinuations that Obama was a Muslim, which has finally began to fade as report after report disproves it's truthfulness. There was, Barack HUSSEIN Obama...because that somehow should be an indicator of his political views?? Then, it was that his wife, someone who has dedicated a great deal of her life to community service in America, hates America, because of one comment she made that got taken out of context (read the entire comment in context here). And then his associations. What do Rev. Jeremiah Wright (see Wright's "God Damn America" comments in context here) and Bill Ayers (read about Ayer's reform from violent behavior and his accomplishments here, in a right-leaning Chicago newspaper) have in common? It's not that they hate America, it's that they speak out against hateful things that America has unquestionably done throughout our history. No one is excusing Ayer's actions of 40 years ago, but he has since reformed and been accepted and credited among the the scholarly and political community in Chicago. The idea that protesting America is unAmerican completely contradicts the basis by which this country was founded, when we fought for our independence from a government that we disagreed with (it's called a Democracy, in case anyone has forgotten that word over the past 8 years). And P.S. people, America needs to come out against unjust policies and behavior once again.

We can all establish through some simple fact checking that Obama does not "pall around with terrorists". And to be frank, these types of comments probably aren't enough to swing the election in McCain's favor, since it seems the majority of Americans are smarter than this. But, you don't need a majority to inspire a lunatic to do something crazy, something violent, in retalliation to these remarks. The problem is that the Americans who beleive these fables to begin with are too ignorant to go out and actually find the facts. Instead, they develop hateful feelings toward Obama's person, with no regards for his plans or policies. Due to these comments, McCain has gotten through almost his entire campaign without having to raise the serious issues that America today faces, and hopes that this presidency will be given to him based on his "character" (which is by no means unquestionable), his "patriotism" (AKA his egotistical idea that America must fight war after war to remain the most powerful nation) and his seniority in the Senate. This would all be fine and dandy if McCain had the policies capable of moving this country forward. Unfortunately, he doesn't.

McCain supporters, if they are true Americans, should call on their man to end these politics of hate and begin to shape this election, in it's last few weeks, to reflect the real needs of our country. More division will certainly lead to more problems. They should call on him to stop spreading hate, and to start spreading ideas as to how to get our economy back on track, how to end the climate crisis, how to educate the youth of our nation to be able to compete in a global economy, how to create a health care system that benefits people- not insurance and pharmaceutical comanies, and how to restore our fundamental rights and freedoms that the Bush administration has raped us of over the term of his presidency. McCain needs to step up and act like a leader, put his campaign in check, and begin to compete with Sen. Obama on an INTELLECTUAL level. I don't know about you guys, but I want my president to portray intellegence, not elementary and unfounded character bashing.

See a special comment to McCain on the state of his campaign here.

a beginning to the end

The final Presidential debate aired last night. The beginning of the worst politics has to offer over the next 3 weeks can now begin. Im just writing to remind people to read everything you can get your hands on from now until election day. Read articles from every source, county, city, national newspaper you can get. All arguments have been made by the candidates and its time for us as americans to think ALL by OURSELVES. Take the time to visit each candidates website and read there policies in depth, find out fo yourself, think about the impact each candidate will have on your life. Engage in discussions with your family in friends, encourage having an open mind. Its time for us to put this country back on track and its up to me and to you.

This is what you can expect to see over the next 3 weeks:
Bringing down the house: Who caused this economic crisis?

Attacks wil be made on all sides, dont let it blind you.....

Stop the Bleeding

If anything is certain from the economic destruction that has taken place over the last weeks, it is that we are all connected. What affects Wall St is affecting the rest of the world. We are in serious trouble and if we don't act quick we will see soup and bread lines again in this country. This is not a pessimistic view but rather that of realism. I am sick of hearing about the strength of the American worker, I studied economics and the American worker does not factor in here. The American worker is an innocent bystander force to watch this train wreck.

We need serious action NOW! We need to stop the bleeding, we need to freeze the markets and assess what is the best course of action, but if we continue to let the market right itself we will destroy our economy and others around the world. Throwing money at the problem is not going to change anything, hell look at the AIG crowd. They were greedy before why would they change. We need to nationalize banking, not all but most. We have done it before and we should do it again. Once things level out and start climbing again we can privatize the markets again but with much greater restrictions.

Call your Senators and please vote on November 4th!!! Please for the sake of our nation and others choose the candidate that has laid out specific policy plans to take the country in a different direction.

Sarah Palin Talks......you be the judge

"The Alaska governor discussed why she and the McCain campaign have made an issue of Democrat Barack Obama's relationship with 1960s-era radical Bill Ayers amid a market meltdown that has many voters fearing for their investments. Palin repeatedly has claimed during the past two days that Obama had launched his political career with help from Ayers, a founder of the violent Weather Underground group responsible for bombings during the Vietnam War era.

Obama campaign aides said the Illinois senator did not know of Ayers' past when they first met in Chicago. Palin told reporters the lack of clarity about their relationship was precisely why it was relevant to raise it on the campaign trail.

"It's relevant to connect that association he has with Ayers, not so much he as a person Ayers, but the whole situation and the truthfulness and the judgment there that you must question if again he's not being forthright in all of his answers, "Palin said. "It makes you wonder about the forthrightness, the truthfulness of the plans he's telling Americans with regards to the economic recovery.""

McCain camp to focus on 'character' as Economy Plummets

The McCain campaign officially released their new (new??) 'strategy', wherein they would like to downplay the 'issues' and focus on name calling and other "character issues". Presumably, this is what the McCain campaign thinks Americans should focus on? Even as we hit an all time lows in the Dow, as unemployment skyrockets, banks close, taxpayers being told to pay $840 billion to save our (ours??) economy, and the mortgage disaster explodes. Apparently.

"An aide to McCain recently said his campaign would like to shift the presidential race's focus away from the economy, which has been a better issue for Democrats than Republicans. Since then, McCain's running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been questioning Obama's character based on his association with an incendiary pastor and a 1960s radical turned college professor."

The McCain camp would like us to focus on important issues, we really need to talk about the backgrounds of the members of the eight-person Woods Fund Board. Because sitting on a board of a charity with an activist from the 60's is an inexcusable character flaw? And this 'connection' is supported only by the hard facts of a $200 contribution by Ayers to the Obama re-election fund, and their joint membership on the Woods Fund Board.

So, lets not talk about how you don't have a job, how you cant get health insurance, why you lost your home, and please, stand aside as our planet slowly withers away. With less than a month left until election day, the McCain camp would like you to know that this is more important. More important than you, your job, your health, and your home.
Hm.
Now who's elitist?

Enough is enough.

Regarding the Obama/Bill Ayers claims...

You cannot judge one person's candidacy based on the extreme actions of others. I don't disagree that promoting violence is an inappropriate means to achieving a cause. Obama does not agree with this either, hence his adamant push for diplomacy with our adversaries. But that does not mean that I, or he, for that matter, disagree with the cause that a radical might be fighting for. I am not defending Bill Ayers' actions. I am bringing attention to what Ayers has fought for- poverty, the working class, an end to unjust wars. He is no better than the Bush administration in using preemptive attacks against other nations when disagreeing with their policies. I agree with those who stand against Ayers' past actions. War is not the answer. But, there are still problems to be addressed- another unjust war, dire poverty, the decline of the working class. Obama has always been working to fight for these type of causes. He has never, in doing so, promoted violent means to meet his ends. He has never been associated with violent actions, nor has he ever condoned them. Bill Ayers and Barack Obama might agree on the need to address poverty. This does not mean then agree on the best way to achieve that goal. True, Both Obama and Ayers were
members of the Woods Fund. This is the mission statement of that organization-

"Woods Fund of Chicago is a grantmaking foundation whose goal is to increase opportunities for less advantaged people and communities in the metropolitan area, including the opportunity to shape decisions affecting them. The foundation works primarily as a funding partner with nonprofit organizations. Woods supports nonprofits in their important roles of engaging people in civic life, addressing the causes of poverty and other challenges facing the region, promoting more effective public policies, reducing racism and other barriers to equal opportunity, and building a sense of community and common ground.

The Woods Fund has a strong belief in the need for and effectiveness of including the less advantaged in the entire process of addressing issues that affect them. To this end, the Woods Fund encourages and supports organizations and initiatives that promote “participatory policy making” by reaching out to their less advantaged constituencies. Such efforts should involve the less advantaged in identifying and defining the issues that face them, and in forming effective solutions to these problems.

The Woods Fund believes that encouraging a close, learning-based partnership with its grantees can further the causes of Chicago’s less advantaged residents and communities. All grantees of the Woods Fund are expected to engage in a learning partnership. Through this partnership, the Woods Fund expects that grantees will share best practices and successes with the Woods Fund and fellow grantees, as well as those challenges that impede effective implementation. This powerful collaboration has the potential to inform the Woods Fund's grantmaking process and to educate the nonprofit community and others about ideas and strategies that they may successfully adopt."

This is a noble cause. Obama should not be discredited for working towards a noble cause because someone else who is working towards that cause has in the past used tactics that most wouldn't agree with. (Just an aside- Ayers is now a professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, so perhaps the causes he stands for aren't all so bad) But, unlike the Bush administration and Mr. I-used-to-stand-up-against-torture McCain, Obama believes that you can work with those you disagree with at solving a dangerous problem.

You have not heard the Obama campaign attacking McCain on those whom he has associated with, and believe me, there are plenty who could be questioned. How about the Rev. John Hagee? In 2008, McCain says of Hagee, "I'm glad to have his endorsement." These are some of Hagee's quotes...

"All hurricanes are acts of God because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that."

"The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know that there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment."

Is this not a little extreme?

Better yet, go ahead and google G. Gordon Liddy, a Watergate felon who McCain refers to as, "an old friend". Here is one of his quotes...

"Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests ... Kill the sons of bitches." Liddy, like Ayers, was openly promoting armed resistance against the U.S. government.

Or McCain supporter and endorsee Jerry Falwell, who McCain has certainly associated with, who said...

“AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”, and...

“It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening”

Not an association I would be proud of.

The Obama campaign has strayed away from attacking McCain's questionable associations, which perhaps has hurt him in this age of sensationalized news coverage. But the Obama campaign knows that there is too much to actually talk about in this election; too many problems that need to be addressed; too many policies that need to be reformed. And he has laid out his plans to do so. This is where McCain's problems lie. He doesn't have the policies that will change our course. He has no clue. He is in this election to win this election...not to change the course of our staggering nation.

Setting the bar...

In the aftermath of last night's debate, I find myself struggling to accept the banter of political pundits and "news" anchors about the performances of our vice presidential candidates. It blows my mind that a candidate can spew out so much fluff, not mention one actual policy plan, back up her arguments solely with ideology and slogans (How many times can one say "Maverick" in one standing?) and then be credited for her "performance", while it is clear that a performance is all that it was.

While Joe Biden kicked off the debate in talking about his ticket's economic plan and laying out the specific criteria for it, Palin followed with a line about struggling soccer moms and, again, how the "Maverick" stands for reform. Um...Sarah, could you be more specific...for once? Just once?

With the exception of calling for more economic oversight (which neither side disagrees with at this point, but which John McCain has been adamantly against in his years in the Senate), Sarah Palin did not talk about a single policy plan that would change the course of our country or our politics. She did not talk about what a McCain/Palin administration would do to help working families...she just talked to them in their "language" and hoped that would be enough. She repeated the line, "Joe six-pack" and of course, "hockey moms". She even had the audacity to state, "I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record." Isn't the point of the debate to answer the questions of the moderator, which are likely based on what the American people want and need to hear to make their choice for the best candidate?

So I must ask...Is it enough for "Joe six-pack" or our country's soccer and hockey moms to simply be acknowledged without any sort of sound plan to help them in their time of need? Is it enough that Ms. Palin talks in backwoods slang while dodging the questions that you need answers to? Is being able to "relate" to a candidate enough when the candidate has proven to be oblivious to so many important social and foreign policy issues? Do you actually think that Ms. Palin can be taken seriously by foreign leaders by simply puttin' on tough face? The woman has no substance and she explained it herself- "There hasn't been a whole lot that I've promised, except to do what is right for the American people, put government back on the side of the American people, stop the greed and corruption on Wall Street." Well, I hate to break it to ya', Governor, but doin' what's right for the American people requires a plan of action...and you don't have a clue.

America. It's time to raise the bar. If Palin hadn't already proved herself inapt for the VP role in every other media appearance that she had made, she might have been called out on her lack of a single substantive argument during the debate. If she hadn't made the claim (repeatedly, I might add) that Alaska's proximity to Russia attributes to her foreign policy experience, then maybe we would have questioned why every foreign policy response she spewed was based on the idea of "the surge". Maybe if she hadn't come out and disagreed with the consensus of our world's scientist about the cause of global warming, we might question why she doesn't think that knowing the cause is beneficial to solving the problem.

After eight long years of a president that has made our country look like a nation of ignorant meatheads, it is time to bring some intellegence back into the White House...it is time to raise the bar. When you go into that voting booth in November, think about who is intellectually capable of creating smart policies to better your life, not just who'd like to sit down and have a beer with. For cryin' out loud, folks...this woman is just a heartbeat away.

AGE as an ISSUE

There has been a charge over the last 48hours for Senator McCain to release his medical records to the public. McCain released 110 pages earlier this year for 3 hours, allowing Dr's and the media to only take written notes. As Sarah Palin has emerged and the American public is becoming more aware of her background and experience, McCain's age becomes more of an issue.
When you step into that booth on Nov 4th, think............
